If you find yourself drooling over the pages of magazines like Country Living and like me, you covet little more than some time alone with the latest Pottery Barn catalog, then I have some secrets to share with you on how to snag similar styles on the cheap. Here’s 5 places I shop to bring the farmhouse look home without breaking the bank:
1. Cracker Barrel
I know you probably only think of Cracker Barrel as that place you hit on road trips for some Southern fare to soothe your road-weary soul but it’s actually a really great place to shop. I particularly like shopping Cracker Barrel at the end of a season, when you can snag great steals on items that they’re trying to move quickly in order to make room for new merchandise. In addition to shopping Cracker Barrel for home decor (like this sweet pig lamp I bought on clearance for $10 to go in my daughter’s Charlotte’s Web themed bedroom) I also shop for children’s clothing and vintage-inspired stocking stuffers.
2. Kroger Marketplace
If you’re lucky enough to have a Kroger Marketplace nearby, then you know that there are great deals to be had. Last month, I caught two cafe chairs on clearance for $40 each. Compare that to Pottery Barn’s Tolix Cafe Chair, which is nearly identical to my supermarket steal, and I’ve saved over $200 per chair! I’ve also purchased beautiful boxwood wreaths, decorative bowls and even the gingham plates featured in my “Paleo Blue Plate” series all on clearance at Kroger’s.
When I shop Goodwill, I always start at the furniture and then move my way through housewares. Furniture gets snagged before everything else so to get the best stuff, show up early. There’s a few things I am always scanning Goodwill for: Grapevine wreaths I can repurpose, glassware and Mason jars, picture frames I can paint or turn into chalkboards and vintage bedding. The key to buying bedding at Goodwill is watching for bed bugs and making sure you tie the bag as tight as possible and wash the fabrics immediately. These embroidered pillowcases were 50 cents each!
I know what you’re thinking. Farmhouse decor at Kmart? Really? Not only does Kmart carry the fabulous and super-affordable Country Living line, they also have a SWEET rewards program and sales that rival Target. You can also shop and pay online and they’ll have your order ready at the store for pick up, which is amazing when you have your hands full with a feisty toddler who could care less what your shower curtain looks like.
If you saw the dresser we saved from the trash last week, then you already know that I’m not shy about treasure-hunting in the trash. I recommend watching the “free” section on Craigslist or if you’re really devoted, get some gals together for some garbage night joy riding and who knows what you’ll find. Or, of course you could skip the scavenger hunt and shop Etsy for repurposed decor like this sweet, country truck made by my dear, old dad! (How have I not mentioned that my dad has an Etsy shop?!)
